Thanks for posting. I´m in Ariquipa and heading north, but was thinking of heading up into the mountains via Cuzco. Hope everyone else doesn´t have the same idea!

we are also in Arequipa , tomorrow we start to Puno

Currently in Nasca - roads now all clear and strikes over.
Lots of police on the roads, but so far I have been waved through all blocks (and toll booths) without any issues - in fact with nice smiles and waves! Hope this continues into the north of Peru! Pat |
Heading North?
Pat,
I would stay away from Lima and the northern coast. Too many corrupt police and not much to see. Ride up to Cerro Azul the first day (you may want to stay a day as the beach and surf are great this time of year). Then turn east up the Yauyos valley to Huancayo, then north up the beautiful center of Peru to Huanuco, the the back road to Huaraz and north flollowing the Cordillera and the canyon del Pato. Have lived and riden for 20 years in Peru and was riding that route just 3 months ago. It is the perfect timing in the Andes as the rains are past and it will be sunny and warm most every day. I can give you distances, routes, best places to stay, what not to miss,... etc if you wish. Just hate to see you make the "Panamericana North" mistake! Cheers! Toby :mchappy::mchappy::mchappy: |

I´m going to have to do it I´m afraid - I have a time issue. That said I already have it in mind to come back and do the north of Peru properly (probably on a hire bike), and down through Cusco again into Bolivia (which I also missed this time). Peru has been a real surprise in terms of the biking. It will be a shame to leave it this time, but something to look forward to for the future! Currently playing hunt the tyres in Lima - but I have a few good leads for the morning. Cheers Pat |
Hey folks,
If anyone is heading in the direction of the mountains north of Trujillo, you might want to rethink your plans. A state of emergency has been declared and three people have died. Peru Police Arrest Newmont Protesters Amid Emergency Measure - Bloomberg Take care, Dunc. |
