steps buying a bike in Brazil
 

hello all
i would like to know the steps of buying a motorbike in Brazil and be able to cross borders on it please
i got tourist visa and i got the CPF
any one have done that before or any local may help me in that ?
if i find a bike what exactly i have to do regarding registering the bike and be sure i have the right documents to cross borders ,
also any recommended place to buy a bike In Sao Paolo or Rio ?

To register (brand new) or transfer (used) any vehicle in Brazil you need to go through 2 stages.

First you gonna need an identification document (passport, Brazilian drivers license) a valid CPF number and proof of residence. You should get bike's Certificado de Registro de Veículo (CRV), which is the title of the motorcycle, the inspection report, the Renavam report and the proof of tax payment for the vehicle (IPVA - Property tax - and DPVAT - mandatory insurance).

Then you should go to a Detran (the brazilian DMV) pay a few taxes and wait a few days to receive the new CRV (the bikes title to eventually transfer the bike to a new owner but you don't need to carry with you all the time) and CRLV (the document you need to carry all the time with you).

As far as I know if you have the bike in your name and is fully paid (no leasing or bank financing) you probably will have no problems to leave the country with you bike.

Now regarding the best place to buy your bike. It depends the kind of bike you are looking for. For small displacement bikes (125 and 250cc) you can find pretty much anywhere in Brazil, for bigger bikes Sao Paulo will offer you a lot more options. You can check the bike prices in sites like Mercado Livre (the brazilian ebay), OLX (the brazilian craigslit), moto.com.br, Webmotors, iMotos, and various local websites for car and bike sales. Thinking of yamaha xtz 250 tenere
Also heard of Chinese dual.sport bikes 250 c.c but don't know is it that good ?

Yes, unfortunately bikes are quite expensive in Brazil and we have virtually no Chinese dualsport bikes available for sale here (the Chinese brands have a lot of difficulty to enter the market). The only Chinese bikes available here are the Traxx Fly 250, made by Jialing, and the Shineray Discovery 250 but both are very rare in Brazil.

For the more "traditional" brands I would definitely recommend Yamaha's Tenere 250, a really good and well know bike around Brazil and most South America with good availability of used bikes, most of them between R$ 10k (US$ 3200) and R$ 15k (US$ 4800). The Tenere also have a lot of good quality optionals available in the brazilian market to equip the bike with quite reasonable prices (like for example those examples 1 2 3 4 5)

We also have Honda's XRE 300 but the XRE are very well know for it's unreliability (a serious problem with developing cylinder head cracks in special). If you are looking for a Honda bike you should look for the older 400cc NX4 Falcon, a much better bike than the XRE.
