Salar
Cold....very The milkyway:clap: |
Checking Welcome to Weather Underground : Weather Underground and typing in Uyuni, Bolivia gets back high of 61 today low of 34. Sounds chilly for camping unless you have a decent sleeping bag and pad.
I haven't been myself but have read other reports. It sounds like a do-not-miss stark and beautiful otherworldly spot. That's a great reason to go in my book. Most seemed to travel southwest to San Pedro de Atacama when heading to Chile. And onward over Paso de Jama through the Andes. Paso de Jama is over 14,000 ft. and occasionally closed due to snow in the winter, but is a major truck route, so always possible to load the bike in a truck if necessary. Uyuni travel guide - Wikitravel is a helpful site for finding things to see and do, as well as cheap accomadation, cybercafes, etc. Just type in the name of the town you are heading to and voila! More information. Kindest regards, John Downs |
thanks John
Yeah mate have read a few reports my self and have checked out the weather on the net which dose not seem to cold 0 to -2 C at night.
For me the question is more what it really like at the moment ? If some has done it in the last couple of weeks? Anyhows I will go next week and find out for my self :scooter: M |
Last I heard it was still a little wet in the past few weeks? I can tell you that it gets much colder than -2 C. the nights I spent on the Salar last October were around -14 C, but days were comfortable around 15 C. South of there elevation increases and its usually around -20 C or colder at night. One night I spent at Laguna Colorado it got down to -26 C with winds blowing at 30 mph. Its cold. The wind blows 30 mph+ relentlessly from August through October. A tent and a warm sleeping bag are essential IMO.

Heya Motylek
Was on the Salt Flats yesterday.Great fun!!!A little bit wet at the entrance in Colchani where they are exracting the salt but after that its nice and dry. You can avoid the wet patches though.Recommend you go to the island of pescado about 65-70kms from the entrance. The deeper you get to the slat flat the smoother it gets. Temperature during the day was good.Very sunny and you definetly need sun cream and sunglasses. But when on the move with the bike it can get a bit chilly.Havent stayed in the Salt flats at night but in the town of Uyuni, once the sun drops it gets cold. All the best Iasonas |
Camping on the Salar
Camping out there was great (Nov 2010) so I'll pass along the advice we were given. Don't camp out in the middle!! People use the salar as a highway, and you don't want some drunk/asleep driver taking out your tent at 3 am. But there are islands scattered around, so camp near the edge of an island. The additional benefit of that is that you can hike up the hill to get AMAZING views of the salar.
Just to give you an idea, have a look at our photos here. Have fun! Laura ridingaround.wordpress.com |
