So, you forgot to buy insurance?!!

So, for all you BONEHEADS who forgot to buy your liability insurance before you entered mexico, and woke up in a cold sweat in the middle of the night in some Mexican city deep within the frontier (Ahem, by boneheads, i mean me ;( )there is a solution. After many hours of searching on-line insurance sites that actually recognised my bike (bmw r100gs)i found this: www.puerto_penasco.com
I easily purchased insurance online and had a policy within an hour. Print it out and your on your way. Durring my travells i´ll try to find some kind of important looking stamp to make it look more official http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/wink.gif

Flying Gringo,
I think you are riding a piece of junk that $100.00 can fix everything or if it is stolen you will be relieved.

Sjoerd Bakker 28 Dec 2005 23:04

Sheeesh, !!
Flying Gringo, the insurance being talked about is for public liability, to cover your butt in case you have an accident with a Mexican involved. You can't even buy insurance to fix crash damage for motorcycles in Mexico. Get this insurance and you at least have a chance to get a lawyer as supplied through the insurance to keep you out of the jusgado.

Mr. Ron 29 Dec 2005 06:23

I talked to the police about this recently. Being a foriegner, if i have an accident and hurt a Mexican, i go to jail. The time in jail is drastically reduced if you have insurance. The insurance company will provide a lawyer that the mexican authorities will recognise and will guarentee compensation for the family. Mexican liability insurance is mandatory in mexico and you will be jailed if asked for it by the police and you cannot provide. To date i have never been asked to provide insurance papers by either the police or the military. This is all from the horses mouth! Gringo, if you ride inn Mexico without insurance, you are taking a huge risk. Especially with the driving habits of some Mexicans. All companies i researched will ONLY provide liability insurance for a motorcycle. Everything else works on a cash basis.
BTW, i didn´t buy insurance at the boarder in Paloma because, well, i simply forgot. In that time i think of all the children that ran out in the street in front of me, had i not have been paying attention... http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/frown.gif

Well, you may be missing something.
I always say......when in Rome.

If you are going to be in mexico for more then 2 weeks, buy a 6 month policy. Its way cheaper. A year policy for liability only, for the average mexican, is under $200. I'm sure someone with a brand new pick-up will pay more, but no where near 3000. In belize its the same deal, with the added benifit of a refund of what wasn't used at the border. I'm not trying to persuade anyone to buy or not to, but if asked my opinion, I would. The when in rome thing can be countered with the sheep jumping of the cliff thing.

Good point to note is that Mexico is much closer to the US, so those who think they can bribe their way out of not buying insurance will have to fork over much more cash (probably the equivalent of one year's insurance) than what you might think you could have bribed your way out of!

I found a thread dealing with Mexican insurance and if you link from msg996's posting to the insurance site, I found one-year policies for $130 (US) for a Zongshen 200cc enduro in Mexico.

I got a quote from your company for $12
a day for full cover and about $9 a day for
basic liability.
Wrong! did you happen to run those numbers on an annual basis?

Would you pay $4,300 a year for insurance on your bike? Or $3,200 for basic liability? I pay $250 a year for full
cover on my Vstrom.

first of all..it is NOT "MY" company molly...and I ask you ..."did you run a quote on an annual basis??????"...for the Vstrom it quotes one year coverage at $138...a full year...WTF are you talking about?..did you just quote a one day policy and then assume that is a daily rate for a full year?.....it gives you the breakdown for the proposed timeframe and 6 months and annual....

..have a fun ride

whatever.....

Freeflow, why get into an argument? While it would be nice to go through life like a hippy, the reality is that things go wrong. You or I would buy the insurance (the near definition of insurance is guarding against a chance that something bad could happen), and those that refuse might get into some bad trouble down south. Let Molly think that insurance costs $4000 + for and annual policy and refuse to buy it. Oh well if anything bad happens to her. While "when in Rome" might be an attitude for some, mine is "sh*t happens" (and it does all the time) and I'd get the insurance.
