Selling Chilen bike in Colombia
 

My friend and I bought two bikes in Chile, new, fully registered with all the documents.

I have read in places it may be hard to sell because of the import tax in Colombia with used foreign vehicles.

Could anyone advise me if it would be worth selling the bike for parts or trying to sell them 'not so legitimately' in a small town where they dont have transport police.
Also, if anyone has experience shipping a bike from Colombia to the UK that'd be a great help.

I suspect you bought bikes that are papered in Chile. In addition to shipping, you need to investigate the cost to import them into the UK, or where ever final destination may be. If they are cheap bikes, it might not be worth transporting them home...

It would be great if you find a solution to this as my bike is currently in Chile and next fall I want to ride it to Colombia, get rid of it somehow and then fly to Mexico.

I know in Chile 99% of the time you have 6 months to leave the country and then return the country. If you do not you are liable to incur fines as a result of overstaying the export permit.

One thing I wondered is how that would play out if you did manage to successfully import the vehicle into another country, say Colombia, would one then get some sort of documentation that one would show to Chilean aduana, and if so, would this appease the Chilean authorities?

Selling 'not so legitimately' would not only violate your Chilean export permit but would presumably violate the TVIP issued by the Colombian authorities. I am not sure what the fallout of this would be? But presumably if you fly out or leave overland, you wouldn't deal with the Colombian aduana so how would they know, unless the entire computer system was computerized?

One idea I had was taking the plates of the bike and selling it as parts or to a farmer, and then reporting it stolen, but this is rather naughty I suppose. Like I said, if you find a solution to this I would love to hear about your experiences.

What bikes are they? I think, though I'm not sure, you might have to modify them to pass EU emissions regulation unless of course they are vintage. Along with import fees, shipping, this could probably work out expensively.

Let me understand this. You can buy a bike in Chile after jumping through paper hoops, once papered might not be able to enter Peru, you have a limited time (6 months) to travel outside of Chile and have if you don't get back within said time period you are screwed... Did I get this right?

Question. Why do so many people talk about buying motorcycles in Chile? Help me out. Did I miss something?

There shouldn't be an issue getting to Peru if the title is in your name. I think people have ran into problems with a POA i.e. they've bought second hand bikes in Chile.

If you buy new in Chile I would suggest you can travel across boarders very confidently. For those interested, buying in Chile has just got harder as of 2015 as you now need a Chilean 'representative' to act as some sort of guarantor.

But the rest, then yes that is pretty much the case. Someone said you can get a year extension from the aduana but when I asked he seemed unsure and said you needed to be part of a automotive club, or at least that was what I understood.

To do things 'correctly' it seems my only way around it would be either to ship the bike back to Chile, then fly down and sell it, or just drive it back myself. The former would be so expensive I might as well just leave it lying around with the keys in the ignition and hope it gets stolen and the latter isn't really conducive to my travel plan and would be expensive and time consuming.

My main concern wouldn't be so much the Chilean aduana as you have nothing to do with them when you go as a tourist but invalidating my Colombian TVIP, but then people on the HUBB said they have done this, so it'd be great to her from them?
