Santiago to Tierra del Fuego-2up on a Harley

What options

I want a hard surface, preferable paved, and not travel the most easterly highway #3. I will travel this road on the northern return to Viedma, to attend the HU meeting.

Which route is best to Bariloche Argentina for this type of bike.
Through Mendoza and down route 40 or down the Pan America in Chile and then cross to Bariloche at Puerto Montt? Or neither?

What then is the best route contining south from Bariloche to Tierra Del Fuego

A little gravel is manageable as I have traveled on this bike through all of Central America and Mexico. Mud is impossible with a 800 pound bike + riders + luggage

I have considered taking the ferry from Puerto Montt to Puerto Natales, but it would be to early in our trip to spend 4 days on a boat.

Hi
The most part of the west roads from Santiago to Tierra del Fuego are not paved, are not mud, are “Ripio”. The East Route 3 are paved.
Your first option from Santiago to Mendoza and then the “40” to Bariloche is the best way also you can take the “Ruta de los Siete Lagos” (route of 7 lakes) between San Martin de los Andes y Bariloche then to Bolsón by the 258 and then to Esquel by the “Parque Nacional Los Alerces” (RP71) gravel but in very good condition and more beautiful. Then you can cross again to Chile by Futaleufu border and there take the Carretera Austral or the Ferry.
Also check the site from my good friend Hayden Durnell he made more less the same trip two years a go also on a very heavy Harley.
Hope to CU in Viedma

From Santiago to Puerto Montt is a very boring two lines highway. You can cross to Argentina from Osorno by a paved road.

Carretera Austra Route

Thanks for the information. Looking forward to taking this route through Argentina. Now what can you tell me about the Carretera Austral through Chili. This route looks fantastic, if it is doable 2 up on a Harley. What kind of road surface can I expect? Any problems getting gas?
Also, any idea when the date for the Argentina HU meeting will be announced?

Don't want to worry you, but the CA was the second hardest (unsurfaced road) we took two up on an R100GS....think the Harley may be more tricky....or not...twas hard, but changes all the time.....in 2012 it'll be all surfaced they say!
See these pages onwards for details http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/tst...ies/001658.php

Doesn't mean you wouldn't find it easier than we did - but background none the less - stunning road
