San Pedro to Uyuni
 

Hello folks!
I am currently in Calama to fix some things, have already spent a couple of days in San Pedro and want to ride through the Salar of Uyuni (covered by water last time).
Do you have experiences as to how the border closest to SPdA is, if I would have to do the paperwork here or in SPdA, how the road and gas situation is there?
Otherwise I might take another loop to Uyuni and book a 3 day trip...

I took another route via Ollague,stunning landscape. Border man wanted to trouble ny life.Guess he wanted money. Made it in without paying.
Now exploring the Salar.

now its too late i think so but i would recommend the route through the lagoons. on the top of pass jamal to the left to bolivia.

wonderful landscape beautiful lagoons, flamingos, geysiers and much more.

next gasstation is in san cristobal(real gas station) or "vilal mar"(only from spare tanks).

Take 150 boivianos for the entrance of the nationalpark with you. Don´t forget the second stop at the "aduana" by the geysiers...


i drove both ways this year, its not possible to compare the lagoon route with the one to ollague. its unbelievable beautiful

What specific hassles did the bolivia aduana give you. I know some of them make it hard for USA citizens regarding their visa, but thought you would be exempt from visas

First he was complaining that I had entered the Office, which was empty. I just pointed at the sign on the door that said in big letters: ABIERTO, pase no mas! (OPEN, just enter). Guess he did not count with me understanding spanish...
Then he said in a smug way that I will not enter HIS country. I guess he was pretty happy for having found something to "get" me after having failed the first time.
My passport will expire in november and obviously you need at least 6 months of valididity when entering...
Then he mumbled sth like: unlike others you do not even have to pay...so I reckon, he wanted some $ to oversee the date...
I made it without bribing by giving him many arguments....

weird, this guy at the border was so friendly to me...or my spanish is too bad :D

The expiring passport is taken seriously in some places. An EU citizen boarding in Bahrain (I think) when we were in the line behind him was refused boarding to a flight to his own EU country because he only had a month on his passport. Didn't see the final result, but they had him sweating
