San Pedro de Atacama to Uyuni now

Hi lads,

all the threads i found where ages old.

I´m in San Pedro now and on Wednesday i want to drive over to Uyuni, no bloody clue about the roads or other conditions, so, is that a bad idea on my own as well, this time of the year?

Maybe anyone wanna join?

Thanks a lot for help

Jens

I was under the impression that now (mid winter) was the best time to go. Maybe someone can come along and correct me.
If in doubt, ask one of the 4WD drivers doing the 3 day SPdA to Uyuni tours and see what they have to say. Or just ask the girl on the desk at your hostel.

btw Jens, the ride betwen Uyuni and Calama (I went the other way) is probably the best motorcycle riding I have ever experienced. It's hard, it's remote, it took me two days, I fell off, I had to beg petrol in a strange town, I broke down and I was terrified for much of the time but it's also one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever had.

[edit] If you're an experienced dirt rider, it's probably an easy afternoon out. I'm not.

Hi!

We rode the Lagunas 1,5 weeks ago from San Pedro de Atacama to Uyuni.
It's not that hard. 15Km's before Laguna Colorado is the start of the Corrogations not nice but ok.
Pretty cold overnight. We had -18 at the Laguna Verde.

Appart from that it was a awesome ride!!!

I did San P across to Argentina Pasa de Jama) - great ride.

Then up to Tupiza (all good). The tupiza to Uyuni is virtually all rippio. I didn't enjoy that & it is just about a full days ride to do 208 kms.

Enjoy it whichever way you go

Hi,
I am currently in San Pedro waiting to do exactly this, pass is supposed to be closed through today because of snow, and should be sunny and open tomorrow. I am staying at los perales camping with a toyota truck camper, stop by and say hi or reply and we can meet up.

Thanks a lot lads, all of you, i¨m in La Paz already.

Was a lot of fun, just a bit windy and my rear damper decided to get rid of all the oil and nitrogen in Ollugue. No mechanic in Uyuni or parts, so all the way to Sucre without rear suspension.

Still enjoyed it, had lots of time to look at the landscape

We're in Sucre today (30th) and leave for Potosi tomorrow heading for Uyuni, anybody got info on the road between these towns/cities and fuel availability?
Also thinking about crossing from Colchani to Coqueza (across the salar), we think we've seen info about a track across there but can't recall where/when and whether it is possible?

Cheers

Sucre to Potosi all paved,
Potosi to Uyuni brand new street, except the last 20km +/- and a few short diversions
