Don't go around! Go straight through the most used part! I got stuck in what I can only describe as primordial oooze trying to go around. The water crossings look deeper than they are. I cruised through them once I got unstuck.

December to March/April is rainy season in that part of the world, so its definetively not the right time of year to go to the Salar de Uyuni.

the main road from Puno - la Paz to uyuni is all paved and in good condition.

You can decide if that is good or bad for you ;)

Don't pay pribes at police checkpoints on that way. one guy tried with me...
