roads blocked in guatemala
 

The CA 2 , that's the road on the pacific coast coming in from Mexico (Tapachula) and going to Escuintla , is blocked at KM 126 , because a bridge was washed away .
Traffic is open again on CA 1 , but still very slow because of some major landslides .

Also another important road with closed spots is the CA 1, the Panam, or Interamerican Highway.I t was shown on TV news here in Canada yesterday 6 Sept 2010 with video of major landslides which killed upwards of 20 people.
One report carried the place name of Chimaltenango, which is a town and a province. A second report with video had the location of town of Nahuala which nails it down to the section of highway just north of Lago Atitlan. This makes sense to me , recognized some of the features- the highway is cut through volcanic rock and ash deposits and was recently widened. The cut banks were extremely steep and tall and of questionable stability. Recent heavy rains have lubricated the soils and multiple slides have taken place. It will take some time to get that all cleared

CA 1 is open for traffic , it is just slow where the landslides happened . But then again , that's no problem if you are on a bike , you do not have to wait , you just pass everybody and just ride trough :scooter:
