Road Conditions to Cosco from North
 

Hi,
I have a tentative plan to use 3N and 3S from Huaraz to Cusco.

Is there anyone that can describe the road conditions for this route ?

Any parts to avoid ?

Gravel/Tarmac rate ?

Or is there a better way?

I would like to avoid Pan American 1N and 1S.
Some say : Ride Pan Am to Nasca.

But I would not like get into too hard riding, that takes too long time.
Tarmac and gravel in good conditions are fine.
And some harder parts, as long as they are not too many and long.
I prefer to watch the views. Not concentrate on hard riding.

Hi Erik,
The route you on your map is exactly the same as my one, except that I came from the Peruvian Amazonian way to Huanuca, so you already have my comments on it, but here are two reminders:
The mantaro canyon section between huancayo to Ayacucho was the most challenging one of my trip, and that includes the devils trampoline in Colombia.
The road from Ayacucho to Cuzco was one of the best in terms of scenery, road condition and traffic.

I will read again. Now when I have concrete ideas.
My plan is to return to Colombia the jungle way.

Cusco was the planned turn around point.
But I might turn around earlier.


I am thinking of something like the first picture.

Or turn at Huanuco. And follw your route backwards

The second picture shows the road so far.

3 days there has been parts that are so bad road surface.
That I had to zig-zag between pot holes in 20 km/h fora couple of hours.
The riding was not dangerous as the trampolin. But much worse road conditions. So more demanding in that way. Both fo me and the bike are shaked.

If you take the road I took for your way back in Peru, and stick to the highway in the Amazonian region, you will not get anything like that, as the road is bitumen, and in pretty good condition and not too much traffic for South America. The only challenging bit is the 75km section of the mantaro river canyon, and that is VERY challenging. Check it out on dangerous roads website

Thanks I will turn into the jungle before that part.

The mountain roads keep adding dangerous parts.
There was one with tunnels and balconies, north of Huaraz.
North of Caraz.

Do not use the 3N to Huanuco because the road beyond La Union is totally destroyed by ongoing road works. So from Conococha leave the 3N and take the 16 to the coast then 1N to Lima.

It was really bad.....

And it was far from the only part.


I wanted ti ride in the mountains and in the jungle.
Cusco was more like a way point.
I did my best to keep riding in the montains.
But I decided that enough is enough.

I truned NE in Tarma to ride the jungle

My route so far and the planed route to Ecuador.
(I am in Tarapoto now)

No forigners on this jungle route.
