There are rainy periods in much of Colombia twice a year around the equinoxes. This year has had a lot more rain than usual and road damage is also worse than usual. Most unsurfaced roads have some damage every year, though landslides and washouts. There are usually alternative routes although these can be in poor shape, and even if not when heavy traffic takes them because the primary route is closed they can deteriorate rapidly. Travelling on a bike is usually less of a problem because a bike can navigate narrower sections than a car.
There are currently several routes which are closed, however the one which presents a significant challenge is from Popayán south to Pasto. The Pan American Highway at Rosas is completely closed owing to a massive landslide, and will take months to rebuild. There are some alternatives, none of which is easy. One adds 12 hours to the trip, and is reportedly very muddy owing to the traffic now using it. There is reported to be a one-way system, so passage is restricted to certain hours in each direction. There are longer detours however none is without challenge. If you do not plan to travel south of Popayán this closure will not affect you.
