Please Help-urgent Info Required On Chile Border
 

so this is the deal everyone, I managed to leave chile in the North without getting stamped out. Stupid I know but easier than you think as I though after a 2.5 hour ride they may put a border post by the border. i was wrong. Argentina let me in but I really need to go back to Santiago as my bike is burning more oil than Saddam on a bad day in 1992.Basically does anyone know if they will try and drain my not yert existant pension fund in fines to let meback in,and if so is there a cheeky way back in near santiago. Currently in mendoz.Also I have not overstayed my visas etc so thats all sweet.please help me out.cheers Simon

I went from into in the north, across part of the Atacama desert from San Pedro de Atacama, Chile to Susques, Argentina. Map here:

The Argentinian border post is on the top of the pass. The Chilian one, way down on lower altitude in, if I remember correctly, the outskirts of San Pedro de Atacama. Furthermore, again if I remember correctly, the border office is down a road a little, off the main route.

Which is to say, that if you want to get into Chile without being noticed, this might be an option.

Beware that the Argentinian side is all dirt road. See my blog entry here:

It is a long way from where you are, so maybe there are better options.

The road that passes through Paso de Jama onto San Pedro de Atacamba is paved the entire way. The Chilean Customs/Immigration office is closed on Sundays, maybe Saturday also. There is no gate.

yeh thats where i forgot to get stamped out of. but currently i am in mendoza so want to cross near to santiago. any routes here i can sneak through otherwisw what is the consequeces if i come clean. honest mistake and all. as i said, i stamped in just not out and i havent overstayed anything.

I once arrived at the chilean border when immigration noticed they had forgotten to stamp me out at the last visit. I did went to see the officials but they somehow forgot to stamp the passport and I did not notice it either. He saw I had entered ARgentina before the chilean visa had expired, scratched his head a bit and a bit more but then stamped me in.

First put in order your papers, gor to the Chilean Consulado in Mendoza. Then you can return by the legal way.

thanks everyone for your advise, I managed to get back in after being called an 'illegal' for a few minutes. They finally laughed it off and all was well.

Next mission is Ushuia tomorrow morn from Santiago.

I need help with routing from Santiago to Ushuaia
 

:helpsmilie: I see that you are on your way to Ushuaia from Santiago. I am from South Africa and plan to do that route in six weeks time. I need guidance on the best map routing to enjoy max scenery on combination of paved and reasonable condition unpaved roads, with a tank range of 200 km between fill-ups. Can you help & do you know what the walk-on situation is with ships to Antarctica?

The best route as far as I know north from Ushuia would be ruta 40 up until lago beunos aires, then cross to the carretera austral. From there you get the best routes. Also see the glaciers on the way up

Fuel... 200 KM!!!!! is that all.. you will need about 15 to 20 litres spare but only for 1 section...I forget the name of the leg but i think its 260 miles without fuel. That will be you only prob.
