The only road available between Macapá and Oiapoque is the BR-156. The distance between the two cities is 570 kms of which 220 km of unpaved road (between Calçoene and Oiapoque) and virtually no gas stations.

Just drove that 2 months ago the other way round

Excerpt from my blog that day!

Had to do my immigration and bike papers, so 8 am I was standing in front of the Federales to get our entry stamp for 90 days for Brazil. Then went to the custom office and after running around for 2 hours, we had all the necessary documents and took off for the Amazon river and according different people between 6 and 12 hours away. The first 50 km went on a good highway, then the red dust dirt road showed up for another 100 km, so we were covered again in red mole dust and it was 35 degree in the shade, almost ready to die from the heat. After several stops to get cold water, we reached a brand new road to Macapa what was 400 km away and were finally testing the speed of our bikes and just before dark rolled into Porto Grande about hundred km away from Macapa,

This is where you return your bike's paperwork, close to the fish market on the waterfront in Oiapoque, the brand new bridge is still closed for all traffic, so you need the small Lancha's to get across!

Let me know where you find the parking place, because in 6 weeks I will be in Uruguay for the same reason ( Look @ my blog) it seems you can park your bike there for up to a year , to leave the bike till the end of November to get to Tierra del Fuego in summer!

Christian, do you have bikes with french numberplates?
Last year we met french travellers with a french registered car who told us they were turned back at the British Guyanese border. We thought it was some made up story for some reason. When entering the ferry to leave Suriname we were asked if we had a french car as we would not be allowed ...and when we asked the Br.G. border official he said indeed that french registered vehicles are not allowed. The border official could not explain why. Try to find out at their embassy if this still applies or was only temporarily

when bridge opens ?

has anybody an idea when the bridge will be open for traffic ?

surely all the local boat/barge owners will lobby as hard as possible to keep it closed but then the bridge is there and will have to open one day or another

Hi Ivan!

Good to see you here!
Seems brazil is not making an effort in installing their officials at the bridge and the acces road to the bridge is not ready either. This was on the Globo News some weeks ago. They said the opening would not be before september but could easily be next year too ...
Abraço,

Marcel

Hi Christian

I just rode the rd from oiapoque -macapa
it is still in the condition that Scooper said
the rd was dirt with lots of water filled potholes
can see how bad the rd will get if it were to rain a lot
the bridge is still not opened
