Need to buy a tire: Argentina, Uruguay or Brazil?
 

Hi, me and my girlfriend are travelling in our KLR650 2 up from Santiago to Ushuaia and then north america... we are currently in Viedma and we will reach buenos aires in a couple of days...

we really need a new rear tire but I don't know where is the best place to buy... I'm searching on the web but the prices are so high! in chile I can find Pirellis MT60-MT70 for less than $100 USD but in brazil and argentina the prices are at least 50% more... I'm looking in wrong places? Where I can find a decent rear tire around our way? (we will go from Bs As to Uruguay and then southern Brazil)

Should've bought in Chile, as you've noticed. Prices will get higher and higher until they peak in Brazil.

If you're headed for Buenos Aires, stop in a Dakar Motos and check their used/left behind tires. In any case, purchase before you get to Brazil.

Did I mention how much tires cost in Brazil?

Dont even think about buying in brazil the tax is nuts ,was quoted R$360.00 for a 120/90/17 mt60 for my honda falcon and usaully pay about R$120.00 for the same tyre in cuidad del este paraguay.Just be careful when crossing back over the tax on tyres in brazil is 80% not sure about non residents if they see you with a brand new tyre you might get taxed ,best thing do is first passport control then head back over and change tyres and ride striaght back threw ,i have never been stopped crossing the bridge and nearly always buy all my tyres there car and bike good luck .

Whoa!!! Thanks guys! I know that i should buy it in Santiago but you know, 2up on a klr650 for one year (I hope) is a little bit over-luggaged and we already did 6400 kms, a spare tire wasn't an option. Paraguay option sounds great but isn't in our route. I will ask in every moto shop from here to buenos aires and I will visit Dakar motos anyways. Thanks very much!!!

You will learn that it's better to buy tires when they're cheap than to wait until you actually need one. This has nothing to do with the decision to carry or not carry a spare.

I paid about US$250 for a tire in a small town in Brazil, and that was after waiting for two days for it to be delivered from Rio. I learned my lesson.

If you're not going to Ciudad del Este, that means you're not going to Iguazu Falls.....? Big mistake.

You are right, but in our case is definetly not an option, we don't have any space at all, just for more stickers. Yes, iguazu falls are amazing but we can't ride everywhere, we really want to visit Uruguay and southern brazil and the iguazu falls will be there when we will return to Chile, we can do anotare trip to visit them, it's close ;)

You're missing the point. Don't carry tires around if you don't have space. Instead, buy a tire and install it. Give away the old tire. It doesn't matter whether your old tire was thoroughly trashed or not. You'll still come out ahead of waiting until you need a new tire....especially if you're headed for Brazil.

I'll say it again differently: change out your tires wherever tires are cheap. Don't wait.
