Need a Bike, Equipment and Advice in Santiago, Chile

I'm living in Santiago, Chile for the next month and want to buy a KLR 650 or it's equivalent for a road trip around all over South America. I'm starting from nothing, so I also need all of the equipment as well. I have cash in hand and am ready to buy immediately.

Also, I need to learn how to do the basic mechanic work for any problems that I may face on the road. Any suggestions on the best way/place for me to learn? I'd be happy to bring the pisco and beer to anyone willing to teach me. I really appreciate your help.

Regards,

Justin

I'd offer to come and help, but we don't get to Santiago until the 1st Nov.

Justin, I just posted my Suzuki DR650 Adventure Motorbike for sale add at the link below. It's a great bike and ready to roll. We could meet in Foz de Iguacu, Ciudad del Este or Asuncion. I'm willing to spend a day with you teaching you the ins and outs of the bike. It is a simple single cylinder, air and oil cooled bike. Let me know if you are interested.

Thank you all for the responses. I've found a bike from another American traveler, but now need to find out how to get it in my name so that I can travel around South America. I also still need to learn how to work on it. I'd love to meet up with any of you all for beers if you're in Santiago, Chile.

Hi,

The official registration of a vehicle can only be changed in the country of origin. If its a bike from chile just make shure the circulation permit, road worthy and insurance is valied and transfere the ownership together with the current owner at the notaria.

If the bike is from a country too far to go to read this:

When I tryed to enter Peru with my bike and a power of authority document of the person written in the papers they send me back so I had to change the name in the papers...

Enjoy the beautifull continent, Tobi

Thank you for the great response, Tobi, and I really enjoyed reading your blog!

So you used the power of attorney for the bike to cross into most countries and then used the "changed papers" after you got into Peru?

For later border crossings, did you give up on using the power of attorney or did you just use the "changed papers" if the power of attorney didn't work? Thank you for your help.
