Moved: Can I buy a cheap bike in Buenos Aires?

Hi there

We are 2 New Zealand guys travelling to South America, Buenos Aires on the 17th February 2010.
I want to buy a cheap bike to ride for 5 weeks to Santiago before I head back to New Zealand and if my mate can sort out his full licence he will want to buy a bike to ride around South America for the next year or so.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Good to see you left yourself plenty of time for this, are you sure you are ready to do a ride down here?

Hey there TS.

Ive done more than 23 countries in the last 2 years and if we can get bikes for this trip it would be great. We are hugely flexible with our plans and if I got 3 weeks riding out of 5 Id be chuffed. So if you have any helpful advice it would be cooler than your last paragraph of wisdom.

Gracias,
Rob

Yeah sorry m8, it just seemed to me asking this late in the day is a bit ambitious, but then I do like to organise things well ahead of time, just the way I am.

It would depend on what bike you want and I think the best bet would be to buy a Kiwi registered bike, to ease the paperwork along. Failing that, you would have to buy a loca registered bike, I cannot help with that.

I am in the process of selling a US reg bike to a US bloke, that is a lot simpler.

Good luck

Hi Rob
Welcome to the HUBB. I moved your thread to this sub-forum where more people are going to read it. Browse through the other threads here and you'll get useful info. Also look in the Bikes wanted/for sale forum. There are 1 or 2 posters whose comments you might want to skim-read (IMHO), but there's tonnes of useful, concise info on this site.

Trips don't need to be planned years in advance. Just make sure you have an idea on how paperwork issues can be sorted.

Enjoy your trip.
Chris
