motorcycle driving licences in Peru - Equador - Columbia
 

Hello,

I just arrived in Peru and I'm going to buy a motorcycle to continue my trip. The problem is that I only have a Belgian drivers licence for a car.

According to my info, this licence will be valid to drive a motorbike in Peru (bike > 250 cc) but I don't think this will work in Equador and Columbia.

I wanted to get a Peruvian licence for a motorbike but when the bike is over 250cc you have to do the exam for a car.

If I get this licence, will it be valid for motorbikes in Ecuador and Columbia?

Any tips/suggestions are very welcome.

Hopefully there will be somebody along to answer your licence question soon, but also check your travel, as in medical insurance, there are often restrictions on the size of bike you are covered to ride and you might be required to have a full Belgian motorcycle licence to be covered for anything with two wheels, it is worth finding out before venturing off on a bike.

I travelled with a motorcycle license, but I believe a regular driver's license should be plenty to travel in these countries. On my license (USA) the only thing differentiating a motorcycle license from a regular driver's license is "Class CM" instead of "Class C". These is almost no way an average border official/traffic police will be aware of that distinction, even if they cared enough to check. With an obscure Belgian license, the chances would be even slimmer. I used my old non-motorcycle license many times for traffic stops without any problem.

If it's a real ID that looks official and has the correct name and dates on it, you will have no problems. In my experience those countries were very laid back and border crossings were very simple.

Are the international driver licence are something O.K ?
 

I know here in Canada exist a international driver licence. You go to CAA and they sold you that for not much money, suppose to be good in every country, but I don't know about other countries.

I dont think the cops are going to bother, never-the-less you can contact ecuadorian consulate in lima.
if you got stoped, pretend you dont understand!
Drive in secondary -awesome alternative- roads rather than in highway!

Hey dude,

I bought my motorbike in Chile where it is essential to have a motorcycle licence but i do not.

I got pulled over played dumb and the guy let me go.
In Peru and Boliviar I believe that a passport is sufficient although Id advise keeping your driving licence handy. Ive never had to show one.

Ecuador and Colombia ive been told you'll need an international driving licence which can be easily forged or bought online.

Altogether, from my experiences over the last 6 months is, having the right papers can settle the nerves but not having them is not a problem.
I actually went to a police station and told them i had my licence stolen and they gave me a document to travel with so there are ways.
