Moto buy-back in Buenos Aires?
 

In January, 2005 I plan to fly from US to BBAA to start a four month bike tour around Argentina, Brasil and Chile. I want to find a used bike in BBAA, maybe from a dealer on a buy-back scheme. I did this in UK and twice in Oz., with minimal hassle. Any list of bike dealers in Argentina, any experience with buying / selling a bike there? Are there any on-line bike trader ads?

I have been in BA for a couple of months now, and am becoming more and more confused about what I can , and can´t do. Mariano at motocare.com.arg, was helpful and speaks good english. They have some suitable but quite expensive 2nd hand bikes. Motos are very thin on the ground here, and it is doubtful, now, according to Javier at BA community, that I could exit the country with a bike unless I have owned it for 1 year! Apparently, it is OK if you find a foreigners bike to buy. Too many "ifs" for me - I am now planning on going to Brazil to buy a bike. Let me know how you get on! Mick

hi, I am from argentina, and just came back 5 months from there. Just sold my Tenere. a good place to look for bikes is www.segundamano.com and if not, you can send an email to my friend nachocullen (you know what goes here) yahoo dotttt com that he will take care of you while you are there or will point you the right direction. Dealer bike are expensive, so you are better of finding the smaller shops. You won't find too many big bikes there. There is a good place in Buenos Aires, in Martinez close to my old house were they import parts for all current bikes.

Thanks, very good sources. Two questions: what does "patente" refer to? and, since I had a suzuki stolen in Australia, is there insurance-either accident or theft?

“Patente” can means the municipal taxes or the plate and the theft insurance are very expensive.

Patente = number plate + license. It's kind of important to have it in place so that you have better chances of not being stopped. I remember buying my Tenere and although I had it in my carrying on bag and didn't have the correct bolts to install it that morning drove anyway and had to pay off the p.... to take off. so, patente, number plate and also lights are a must so as not to get in trouble in south america. also, drive calmly and you will be ok. don't bring the attention.

insurance, they are much better now. They are a lot more affordable and you actually recover something. In the old days in argentina the insurance = "el seguro" was a joke.

thanks for the valuable info, especially the restriction on taking the bike out of the country during the first year. Of course, I will only be permitted a 90 day visit, I guess that's the Argentine catch-22. I will plan to start my trip in Brasil, where I can buy and register a bike totally legal from friends, and spend the time in Brasil. It'll be a great trip, less hassle, sorry to miss the nature in AR and Chile.
