Mexican Importation Charges
 

Sorry about the dreary sub-head. Just brought bike into Mexico, without carnet and without credit card. Had to pay $400 deposit, returnable when leaving. Despite what the guidebooks say, TIP available at La Paz ferry terminal, and straight forward. Email me if any questions.

The key here is "credit card." If you had a credit card, it would only be a $25 charge and no bond.

PS Just left Mexico for Guatemala, crossed from Chiapas on interamericano. Deposit returned hassle-free, in dollars, no fuss, no problems. And Mike? Er, I know - that was the point - what happens if you don't have a credit card.

PPS Size of deposit depends on age of vehicle - $400 post 99, $300 99-94, $200 everything else. I think.
