Looking for two bikes in Chile/Colombia for Feb2017 -- dealers recommended?

We're planning a two-person, 6-month trip around South America starting February 2017. It seems like the best places for us to buy and re-sell motos are Chile and Colombia.

We would consider buying from other travellers but think it might be tricky to find (and sell!) two good bikes at the same time, without losing several weeks on either end of our trip.

We found one dealer in Colombia that offers to buy back bikes at 60% of sale price (Buy a Motorcycle – MOTOLOMBIA). Has anyone done this in Colombia?

Also, does anyone know of any similar dealerships/companies in Chile?

We're looking at KLR650 or DR650s.

Any tips are welcome!

(PS: we already did a 3 week trip in Chile/Bolivia in 2010 but we rented because we were short on time)

Hi there,

I am actually doing this... travelling around S.A. for 6 months on a KLR. I bought my KLR from Ride Chile (Ride-Chile.com | Home) in Santiago. They have been friendly and helpful with me - among other things they took me through the paper work and Tómas is my postal address for my RUT. I first travelled south with a paper (a Poder) that allowed me to exit Chile with "his" bike. Later, when I returned to Santiago, I got my original Padron (which is the official paper giving me the ownership of the bike).

Ride Chile sell their used rental bikes. Their are usually a couple of years old (my KLR is from 2013) but maintenance seems to be taken well care of. They offered me a buy-back deal at 60% as well. I will try to privately, though ;-)

And that leads me to the next thing... I am returning to Santiago mid August. The plan was to give my bike a good service check and then sell it. I have not made any official sales add, but I thought perhaps you would be interested in buying it? Mick (also Ride Chile) has (in another context) offered me to store my bike at their place if I needed, so I think it would not be a problem. My thought was that you could then keep in touch with Ride Chile to find/buy another bike near February.

Anyway... just a thought :-)

Ps.: My bike has had no serious problems... Loose bolts, a defect battery, and currently the instrumentation light does not work - which I have postponed to fix until Santiago. Asking price would be 5000 USD. You can see photos of my bike on my blog.

Hi Rhianon
If you are willing to slightly change the starting point of your trip, we might be able to help you out: We are currently buying 2 new KLR650 in Colombia - which we will leave in Ushuaia or Punta Arenas by the end of 2016 - where you guys could pick them up?
Let me know if you are interested!

I am also looking for a bike for a friend though for December in Chile. Preferably under 650cc.

If anyone has something available for that time please email me leigh.dunne88@gmail.com

Thanks!

got bikes set up!

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. We've arranged bikes through a fellow traveller and RideChile shop in Santiago.

Cheers,
Rhianon
