Is long term storage possible for foreign-plated bike?

Hi Folks,
I'm about to begin a 5 month trip around South America and looking to buy a KLR 650 in Chile. At the end of my trip, I'd like to either sell the bike, or store it for 8-18 months, to continue the travels later.
It would be somewhere in the northern part of continent (e.g. Columbia, Venezuela - maybe even Brazil).
I have read most countries issue a maximum 90 day Temporary Import Permit.
Does anyone have experience of a longer term storage option?

Thanks!
Craig

hmmm.. just found this on Brazil

Storage in Uruguay

Hi,

I have been travelling winter months (Canadian winter) for 3 years in South America. Stored illegally in Ecuador one year and smuggled the bike to Peru ( no problem, but not a good idea). 12 month permits are given in Uruguay and I have left my bike at Willies Motos in Montevideo. Lots of riders do that. As far as I know that is the only long permit country.

this is perfect, the bike is stored in a safe place, you can make repairs
you still have 1 year to the border, and if you stay longer, can be arranged
