Licence requirements for Chile and Argentina

Hello All, new here so be gentle!

I have a UK drivers licence for a car and have driven regularly for 20 years, I know that is not the same as riding a motorbike.

I have ridden a motorcycle but do not have a motorcycle licence.

My questions are hopefully simple:

1. Do I need a UK motorcycle licence to legally ride a motorcycle in Chile and Argentina?
2. Do I need a UK motorcycle licence to legally buy/hire a motorcycle in Chile and Argentina?

I realise having passed my test would be a good idea in that it would mean I had training in road safety and riding skills but I would like to first understand the legal/authorities position.

I am thinking of a short trip and would be realistic given my skills/experience but first want to understand if it will be possible to do what I am thinking of.

Thanks.

You do need a full motorcycle licence to legally ride in Chile and Argentina, an international driving licence will be useful and possibly also a requirement. The other thing is you need a full licence to validate your travel as in medical insurance, if you have an accident and try to claim for treatment or repatriation the first thing they will ask for is a copy of your full licence, if you don't have one you are on your own.

Thanks Mark, that is a great, clear, unequivocal response :-)
