Leaving vehicle in Brazil
 

I intend to enter Brazil with my truck and leave it there for some time while going back to Europe.

What are the formalities, for how long can the vehicle stay in Brazil?

According to one reply to Tedmagnum's post on this site, a couple of weeks ago; none whatsoever. Apparently you don't get any documentation for stays of less than 90 days. That wasn't my experience in 2004, but seems things have changed.

Some information at the brazilian customs website (RECEITA FEDERAL DO BRASIL):
Instrução Normativa SRF nº 285, de 14 de janeiro de 2003
(customs procedure for temporary import)

The law in portuguese:

Dispõe sobre a aplicação do regime aduaneiro especial de admissão temporária:

Art. 4º Poderão ser submetidos ao regime de admissão temporária com suspensão total do pagamento dos tributos incidentes na importação, os bens destinados:

§ 1º O disposto no caput deste artigo aplica-se, ainda, na importação temporária de:
I - veículo de viajante não residente.....

Art. 10. Compete ao titular da unidade da SRF responsável pelo despacho aduaneiro a concessão do regime de admissão temporária e a fixação do prazo de permanência dos bens no País, bem assim a sua prorrogação.

§ 1º O prazo de permanência será fixado:

II - em até três meses, nos demais casos, prorrogável, uma única vez, por igual período.

So according to the law:

Temporary import is free of taxes to travellers on their own vehicle.
The customs officer will say how long you can stay in Brazil, it can be until 03 months, renewed just one time for more 03 months.

Well this is the law!!!

If you enter Brazil at Puerto Iguazu, they let you in without a tempory import.. They assume your just visiting the falls on the Brazilian side..

On our exit at the Venezuelian border at Santa Elana, we wernt asked by the Brazilians for any documentation for the bike..

Now, you DO NEED an import for Brazil as the canadians we were with had one !
