La Paz to Uyuni...Trouble??
 

I am departing tomorrow morning from La Paz and heading South to Uyuni. I am staying at a hostel here in La Paz and a guy here said the road to Uyuni was really bad after a storm last week. He said he couldn't see how I would make it driving on a bike when the bus he was on had plenty of issues.

Anyhow, I was curious if anyone had been down that way in the past couple of days or could at least give me a heads up as to what to expect.

I've heard it is bad even without a storm. We went to Potosi so missed. Most of that is paved though. Between La Paz and Potosi it is. Potosi to Uyuni is dirt, but good quality.

How hard it is all depends on your dirt riding skills. Hear the direct route is very sandy. The fact that a bus struggle doesn't mean much to me.

As tmotten has stated, the best route is via Potosi. The road between La Paz and Potosi is very good pavement. From Potosi to Uyuni, decent dirt road. Only one "dry" river bed crossing was axle deep oatmeal consistancy. I handled it on my VStrom no problem. This 50 yard crossing may be the only trouble via this route. If a storm hit recently, this river bed crossing may be a little tricky, but in all it will be way better than the direct La Paz-Uyuni route. It is just a fantastic route anyway. Plus, you can check out the site where Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid robbed a train way back when.....
