insurance for french guiana
 

hi I am trying to get insurance for my UK registerd bike but finding it hard . my uk policy says all EU countrys but when I asked about french guiana they said im not covered ( so not all EU countrys then ) . my friend in germany has tryed for me and they are also saying only EU countrys in europe. I have asked in suriname and they only cover cars ,4x4 and pickups , same with the insurance in company in st laurent. so other than going through Guyana what are the options ?? I can get my bike in no problem but the is a checkpoint half way across french guiana :thumbdown:

I haven't been for myself yet but most people I hear and what I planned to do was use a European Green Card to get through, maybe with a few modifications. Don't expect you to have too much trouble with inspections once inside unless you get in an accident with another person, thankfully I usually crash alone.

There have been stories of the only way to obtain legal insurance for FG being something like a year policy ~700Euro:frown:

the european green card is part of my UK insurance as standard but they said they wont cover me . 700 euro for a bike someone if getting the KY out haha its only 58 euro a month for a car or pickup. I met 2 riders on canadian BMWs and they used the home made insurance option . As I am from the EU you can bet if I use home made insurance and they realise my licence will get fu**ed over even though they dont want to cover me:thumbdown:

Don't think you've got much choice, hey? This is what I answered by p.m.: I paid for a month, but Vince went to the same agency somewhat later on and they would only sell for a full year. No one has yet found any other options aside from using your innate creativity, colonialist instincts, and computer skills.

I think I also mentioned I took the ferry into F.G. with a French couple driving their French-registered camper. They seemed to be doing ok with their Green Card, although like yours it's not valid for overseas territories. That includes Tahiti, plus St. Pierre and Miquellon, as well as French Guiana.

If you find another solution, legions of overlanders will thank you for posting it here. Otherwise, just go for it....and don't get into any accidents. It's a fairly law-abiding country, and as I said the guys at the roadblocks are French nationals, just trying to survive their service and make it home again. Try to offer them a bit of spoken French and some sympathy for their plight and they're not bad.

Besides, it sounds like the route back through Linden is a bit awkward right now.

Still looking forward to hearing about BR319. If you don't get a move on, you'll run into the next rainy season.

Hey guys,

The BR319 is very drivable today. Just finished it in 5 easy days. 3 days of 15 km/hr. Some holes, 1 night of rain, no mud to speak of and lots of dust on the last day to Humaita.

Checking on the Linden blockade now, let you know if I hear anything before we head out tomorrow in the TransAmazonica!

Just got a note from our friends in Georgetown and they say that finally after a month of non talks, there has been made an agreement and a solution is found. This means the road through Linden is open again.

Going through FG nexr september and already trying to get a quote for insurance for my Suzuke 250 DRZ--no luck. I would appreciate some creative help; any template?

I also visited FATUM and SELF RELIANCE in Paramaribo, but they said, that cant sell insurance for Fr.Guyana.

It was very easy to buy Guyana Insurance in Lethem , and also Suriname Insurance (from NAFICO Office) But they said, that they dont sell insurance for Fr Guyana anymore.

Is there any other option to get insurance, because 185 EUR per 1 month is not very cheap price?

In November 2012 I was allowed to enter French Guiana from Suriname without insurance. When asked at the border I listed all of the carriers I had contacted in Guyana and Suriname. I had also stopped at the French Embassy in Suriname to ask for advice, none given, but I did collect then present a business card from same.

I have heard of other riders that were allowed into French Guiana without insurance. I was not challenged for insurance within the country or on exit.

If someone locates a provider of reasonably priced term insurance, it will increase motorcycle tourism in this country!

That aside, it sounds like the authorities are making some allowances based on the fact that no one sells valid insurance any more. This is encouraging. When I was there I paid an astronomical sum for a short policy (100 euros or so), and I definitely needed it.

But other news are, that ferry from Albina to St Laurent (Suriname to Fr.Guyana) is out until 28.Oct 2013.

I am currently in Paramaribo, and drive tomorrow to examine whether there is another opportunity to cross the river.

There are smaller boats. My understanding was that they are not quite fully legal, but who knows? The also appeared not quite fully safe, so think it through.

If the long-rumored bridge turns out not to be open yet to Brazil, there are large and small boats there, too.
