How to get rid of my bike in Columbia?

Hey overlanders, in a month or so I will be in Cartagena/Columbia, finished my SA-trip. I drive a BMW G 650 Xcountry. The value of the bike is about 3000$ with that mileage (85.000km) Till now I couldn't find a shared container to send it back to Europe/Germany. By flight is too expensive. It makes no sense compare to the value of the bike.

What to do?

Any ideas for shared containers. I would pay up to 1000$ for shipping.

Selling in Columbia to a local is probably not possible, I read in this forum, because you don't get it plated.

Any traveller is interested to buy? It's in mint condition. Had regular revisions, the last one in Lima/Peru (1500km). 3000$, with boxes/panniers from Touratech 3500$. It has german plates.

Or other solutions/ideas?

Also if you wanted to ship it, check out container buddies (I've not used it, only heard about it) it's for people who have space in their container to advertise.

Any chance you would want to sell it in Medellin...this weekend?! 😬

I am still in Ecuador. Medellin? I could do it in 10 days, more or less.

Hi seller, I am also interested.

Can we arrange something around my arrival in Bogota on june 30th?

Thanks in advance, greetings, Christian

I sold my VStrom in Colombia for parts to a Colombian national.

I joined a model specific Colombian facebook page, posted it there for sale at a low price and it sold rather easely.

Yes it's not 110% legit but my bike like yours wasnt worth the hassle of shipping back home du to cost.

I got inquiries for my bike, but I have no idea how to get the bike in the name of the buyer. It is german plated. The only idea I have is to sell it to an other german who can change the papers in Germany.

If anyone knows other possibilities here in Colombia, tell me.

NewbRider 23 May 2019 22:23

It's a fairly well covered topic. You can sell the bike via a "carta poder". This doesn't transfer the name on the paperwork but gives the new owner power of attorney over the bike so to speak. What the buyer does with the bike when he's done will be up to them. They can either sell it again on a poder (becomes a double Poder, I've seen up to five on one bike) or if they sell to a German perhaps they can transfer the papers remotely and have them sent.

To get a carta poder go together with the buyer to a notary. Ask for them to draw up a Poder ilimitado. Make sure it cover riding the bike in all countries of south America and North America. Once they've made it for you go to the ministry of foreign affairs and have it apostilled. Sounds like hard work but it isn't. If your Spanish is decent you can get it done in a morning.

Hey JFMAN,
After you sold the bike in Colombia, did you have any problems when leaving the country?
I was under the idea the "ownership" (for a lack of a better word) of the bike was stamped on your passport and leaving the bike behind will create problems in the future.

Thanks

No problems, bike papers don't appear visually in the passport.

Might create a problem if I decide to revisit Colombia one day? Who knows…
