Helpful contact in Salta, Argentina

I had a problem with my bike in Salta. The gearbox was broken. A nice guy helped me to ship the bike back to Buenos Aires. His name is Frank. He is a German who immigrated to Argentina some years ago. He started a business that organizes bike tours. He told me anyone who has some problems around Salta shouldn't hesitate to contact him.
Frank speaks Spanish, English and German.
Check his website for contact info:

I hope this helps if someone is stuck around Salta

Patrick, could you please tell me which part of your bike didn't break 'till now ? Anything still original? ;-)

Emma turned into a big mess :-(
She is now in Javiers shop but even that doesnt help. She doesnt want her gearbox to be opened. We tried for three days....
Maybe a big hammer or a pack of dynamite would do her justice.
Anyway. I got my ticket. I will fly at the end of the month back to Europe. The ticket says Zurich. No idea where that is but maybe they have a good beer there.

Hi Patrick

Its a bugger dealing with that simple design isnt it. Urals have a key system to lock in the ouput shaft flange.....much better. If you can use a rattle gun to take off the output shaft nut, then make up a puller from solid aluminium with four holes drilled in it and a large bolt that screws down through the middle, to force out the flange. You will need to make a brace to stop the box rotating as you undo/do up the nut. Piece of flat metal with a cut out so you can bolt it to the flange using two of the four bolts and still get your socket onto the nut. If you want I can send pictures of the one I had made. Use a "heat gun" like you use for for stripping paint to heat up the lid and tap it with a big rubber mallet to free it up. Then remember where all the shims are, dont spill them all over the floor!!

good luck BOPS is with you. Will you go back and start again from Argentina?

Hi Simmo,
we got the off the output shaft nut but the flange doesnt want to come off. Javier has a puller made. It should be finished in a few days. Hopefully :-)
If you have your pictures handy please send them to me.
I plan to leave the bike here and go back to Germay to stock up my budget. No much left in the purse...
And then I hope to come back and continue.

OnkelKarle, if you haven't already seen this, see here for good gearbox rebuild tips.

And thanks for Frank's contact info.

best of luck, Grant
