Good riding weather in SA November-March?

Hi - I'm planning to make my first trip to Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador and Colombia in November and probably spending about 6 months - does anyone have a perspective on the weather in general in these countries in that time period? I once spent a month in Laos in the wet season and it was just a big pile of mud and impassable roads - in the mountains at least - fun for a while and then a drag...

Are there particular areas I should avoid due to weather-induced road conditions in certain periods?

Thanks for any help!

You will miss some great places

Nov to Mar is a bad time to ride in the Amazon, anywhere from Columbia to Bolivia. You can be OK in Nov, but that's when rainy season starts. Any roads that are not paved will be extremely difficult. Heavy rains for hours on end, and light rains for days on end will set you back day after day after day. I know... I've spent over 30 years there....

The Andes will be OK, just don't have a tight schedule. Many days in Feb, Mar it will rain lightly for 3 hours in the afternoon. You will encounter some "derrumbes" or landslides that will take hour to days to clear, but there is almost always another route if you started early and set an easy day for yourself. Do you ride dirt? If not, better start practicing and get good!

Of course you could do most of your time on the Panamericana if you don't care about seeing anything on your trip....

My advice ?? May to September

Hi Toby

Thanks for that!

My new plan is to make my trip a year :) and start in New Orleans in November, then down through Mexico and Central America to arrive in Colombia in January when it is supposed to be dry season. Then I spend Jan/Feb March in Venezuela and Colombia and take a speedy ride down the panamericana to Bolivia in April and work back up through Peru and Ecuador as the weather improves... Something like that. And yes, no tight schedules for me :)

Maybe I'll see you along the way...

Cheers G

Sounds Good

Sounds much better. I have some good suggestions for route in Brazil, Peru, and Bolivia. In fact I might be living in Bolivia soon!
