Getting Bike into Bolivia from Peru
 

Hiya all,

Anyone done this recently? My guidebook seems to think that its a complete nightmare, but I cannot see why that would be the case.

It also states that a carnet would be hugely helpful...FANKS!

What guidebook is that? We have heard of no problems getting into Bolivia from Peru.

would your guide be the well known toilet paper substitute from looney planot? stick to the footprint handbook. also good as cigarette paper sub (and i don't smoke!).

the border near copacabana is as easy as you like, except the bol police might feebly ask for a "donation" towards the jesus crucifix on the wall in their office. at that point i decided to pretend i understood no spanish and he gave up.

Only problem I ever had at the Copacabana crossing was Peruvians wanted proof of insurance. Since I was leaving Peru they gave up on me, but didn't seem to be looking for a bribe, anyhow. As long as there is no civil disturbance the crossing is a piece of cake; Desaguadero - a touch further south - is no problem, just a horrible place. You can also go around the top of Lake Titicaca. And, yeah, ditch the Lonely Planet - Cusco is a good place to find Footprint books.

Colesy, I crossed via copacabana back in Feb and it was todo tranquilo, nobody asked me for any bribes.

Believe it or not, I got the "it aint easy getting your private vehicle into Peru" bit from the footprint South American Handbook. Been using Footprint throughout me trip so far and they have been bang on about everything...so when I read that it was a mission to get the bike sorted into Peru, naturally I belived the text... Will bung em a mail after I get in stating how easy peasy it was....!

Rich, you lucky sod, I wanted to do Brazil, but am going to leave it for another trip, not enough time on this trip....but do want to visit the worlds sexiest country one day...have it large.
