Gas / Petrol Station - availability in arg/chile?

Hi guys,

how abundant are gas stations towards the south of chile and argentina??

Say for example along the patagonia high road? Or Ushuaia? Are they in plenty supply?

Im planning to buy in santiago and ride south before back up north via the east coast.

Plenty of gas if you've got a 300 mile/500 km range. That means carrying a 5 liter gas can with most overland bikes. If your range is shorter, you need to plan carefully, including asking other travelers about availability, since gas stations are sometimes closed or out of petrol. And don't forget to allow for using 25% more gas due to head and sidewinds.

My KLR has a 22 liter tank. I used my extra can a couple of times, although this was because I skipped filling up at every opportunity. On occasion I cut it pretty close, mostly because it's difficult to account for the wind effects, and I've got no gas guage--only mileage to indicate when to fill up.

Hope that helps.

Mark

(PS: no idea what "Patagonian high route" means)

Northern Chile on the Pan American Hwy you will be looking at about every 200-250kms

YPF has an interactive map for stations on the Argentine side that is accurate, it won't help with supply questions though!

Mapas, rutas, restaurantes y viajes con la Guia YPF.

It may be worth that thread being made into a sticky ?

I have about a 270 mile range on my GS. My rule in Patagonia was to never pass a gas station without stopping, even if you have only gone 20-miles since filling up - stop and top off. Even when you know their is a station ahead, they are often times out of gas. If you do run out, it will be only 10-20 miles from a station. Of course the wind down there will significantly reduce your range.

I agree, doubledown.
In Routa 3 there was many times that the gas station were closed or without fuel. Just in case: fill your tank everye time you find one. :)
Wind? what wind? does anybody talk about wind?????????? doh
