From the equator-line to Ushuaia

From passive to active! It has been a long time I had been only ridding (yeah as a lot of ridders in the last year and months) in 'domestic' roads.
Finally I have at least a fixed week where I will depart an hit the Panamericana hg/road (and others) facing south on a Moto Guzzi v85tt 2up with my 'wifiancenamorada'
With also an arranged appointment, I plan to reach Huaquillas/Tumbes border and I look forward to be cruising the Peruvian roads for almost 2 weeks and get to Bolivian territory by mid February.
We also plan to spend open time in Bolivia and no agenda to face to south fellow riders and keep iconnected in order to border crossing and current info.
My main idea is to reach Ruta 40 and flow with time, budget with a sort of goal to return hitting Carretera Austral and go back to the mythical Argentinan axis.
Feel free to write, or simply suggest the DO'S and DONT'S of this ride.

It is all good, but my suggestion for your consideration is to cross from Bolivia to Argentina, then stay in Argentina to Mendoza, then cross from there into Chile and continue south. And for sure (!) ride the Carretera Austral.

But, make the excursion into northern Chile to San Pedro de Atacama, and then back to Argentina to continue south. That pass is worth riding twice :-).

Ruta 7 (Carretera Austral) is an incredible ride. We rode it in late December and early January, and the wild flowers were in full bloom.

My dream trip.
With so much knowledge that you have about the area.
And your ideas.
There is no Do and DON'T.
Just go for it. Follow your dream

Vaya Con Dios

And please write a travel story with a lot of pictures.
And write about your experiences with the Moto Guzzi.

I had the similar plan. Before that Covid19 hit.
To drive Ruta 40 in one directions and than Carretera Austral in the other.
And not drive zig-zag between them.
And to do detours up to the border from each side
But that is a personal taste. I wanted to do the complete RUTA 40 and the Complete Carretera Austral.

Attached are some pictures of MG memories. From Europe Touring.
(Not intended for SA)

And my planned route in the Carretera Austral area.

Are the borders open??

If yes, where are you getting your information from? I am struggling for reliable sources

Grant Johnson 10 Jan 2022 21:44

Mugsey, some are, some aren't - and it changes fast. Raul (motozen) will be a good one to follow to find out what's happening. He runs our Ecuador Meeting, so has as much knowledge on it as anyone.
Having said that, the only solid answer is - you'll find out when you hit the border yourself. :(
NOT ideal, but for now, that's about it. If you want to go, be prepared to fly out of anywhere, or fly over a country, or just sit it out somewhere nice.
Best of luck, and keep us posted!
