Flying home and leaving vehicle behind

I'm sure I have seen a thread on this topic but can't find it.

Has anyone had problems leaving a vehicle (up to the TIP validity period) in Argentina and flying home for a few months - and if so, what were the circumstances. This assumes leaving Argentina BEFORE the three-month visitor visa has expired.

I know plenty who have done that without any problems, and some who have done it several times, so am just interested in those who were refused clearance at the airport and why.

Also I guess we need to make a distinction between those who "just do it" and have no problems, and those who ask someone in charge can they do it and are then given the official rules which probably prohibit it.

In April of 2013 I flew out of Mendoza, through Santiago to the US, then back into Mendoza (via Santiago again) while I had a TVIP open in Argentina. There were no questions or issues. (In fact, the import document made it easy to bring in some spare parts that otherwise may have been confiscated and/or heavily taxed.) I then flew out of Buenos Aires in October 2013 with the TVIP still open. For this departure I had to pay the fee for overstaying my tourist visa. There were still no questions or issues regarding the temporary motorcycle import.

In either case, I am not sure who I would have talked to in order to verify the legality of it all. But the fact that the customs agent reviewed my import document, and approved the parts I was carrying, upon my return to Argentina suggests that at least some customs agents are fine with the approach. I am sure there are some circumstances where this would not be the case, but in general it seems to work. And I apologize for going against what you are asking for since there were no issues in my 2 examples. Maybe this info will help others in the future, though.

Good luck finding out more details!

Good info - especially the bit about having the TIP with you to get spare parts in without hassles. I knew that system was in place in Chile but not in Argentian
