ferry Punta Gorda (beliza) to Puerto Barris (Guatemala)

hi all,

i'm in San Pedro la Laguna at lake atitlan and planning a trip from there to Cobán to Tikal to belize ride down Belize to Punta Gorda. Now, there is a very from Punta Gorda to Puerto Barrios, and my guidebook (Footprint) tells me it's difficult to ship bycilcle or bike.

Has anyone recent info/experience on this?

thanks,
sander

Hi,
If you type '+punta +gorda’ into the HUBB search function you’ll get a few opinions. The boats are fairly small and you may have to wait a while for a boat at a reasonable price, but it’s saves riding a LOT of KMs.

I wrote my experiences in the thread “Honduras - Belize ferry?"

Hoi Sanderd,
Are you riding a bicycle (pushbike to the Britts) or a motorcycle? The "ferry" boats you are referring to are not truly ferries but only long narrow passenger launches.,not RO RO service like Hoek van Holland to Harwich.
If you are bicycling there is no problem you can toss it on the lancha easily. If you are on a motorcycle it will require you to wait for the right one to come along , they have different sizes and weight capacities, and you will have to hire extra helpers to struggle the bike on board and off again in Pto Barrios .It has been done by HUBBers but it is a lot of work and $
The ride from Tikal to Punta Gorda is not really that long and it would be simpler to just have a look around Belize then head back thru the way you came in at Melchor de Mencos and then go south on CA13 from there. M.Mencos to Pto Barrios if you must go there , can be done in two days . It is retracing somewhat but everything looks different when aproached from opposing direction .Anyway, what 's a few extra motorcycling km ?
