Feasibility of this trip? (Buenos Aires – Quito, March – June)

Hey hubbers,

I think this post is mostly to calm nerves and to see if I’ve overlooked anything major. The only trip like this I’ve done before was taking 110cc bikes from Vietnam-Laos-Cambodia, but I’m only 21 so there’s time yet...

My planned trip is as follows –

I fly to Buenos Aires mid-March where I am buying a UK registered XT600 off an English guy who’ll be at the end of his trip (V5 will be exchanged in the UK before I go). I’m not 100% on the paperwork but I guess to be sure we’ll take it to the Uruguayan border and bring it back in under my name? Tips here would be great.

I’m then riding via Cordoba and Mendoza to Santiago (how is this border crossing?). There I’m spending a couple of weeks in mid April with my dad who’s flying out, so I’ll have to find somewhere to leave me bike (again any help here would be awesome) while we bus it south/fly to Easter Island etc...

Then I’ll ride north to Peru then into Ecuador, perhaps if I have time popping into Colombia, flying home at the end of June from Quito.

Any tips on insurance, borders, if the timing is reasonable, backpacker biking solo, must see sites/roads etc would be greatly appreciated.

Also, if anyone is going the same way at the same time or interested in the bike at the end of my trip please get in touch.

Cheers

Id say the only complicated thing about this trip is the paperwork.
Wish i could help there but I cant.

Border crossing between Mendoza and Santiago is orderly enough and no problem if your papers are in order and you dont try to smuggle food. Weekends can take an hour or more and long weekends can be a real mess.

Send me an email or private message and I might be able to help you out on bike storage in Santiago.
