'exporting' a bike from Chile

Has anyone bought a bike in Chile and exported it to the UK/US/OZ/NZ etc?

Thinking of doing the same with my XT. Also interested in hearing from anyone who legally exported the bike to Brazil and changed the plates.

I'm wondering what taxes need to be paid, which departments to visit, how long the process takes etc.

Apologies if this has been answered elsewhere, I looked!

Cheers

Almost impossible to export a bike to Brasil and register it there I fear...

Anyway, if you do try, the place to visit is the "Receita Federal" and thereafter the "DETRAN"

We nearly had to export our bike when we crossed chile to bolivia. You have 2 options on leaving Chile to Bolivia at the Arica crossing, either have an Agent in Arica draw up you papers allowing to export the bike, or get a 180 permit to cross into bolivia. In order to obtain this permit we were told by the guards that we needed a residents RUT number, we only had a temp one as we got it to purchase the bike. After some hour or 2 and some kind help from the bossman we managed to get this 180 day permit and crossed into bolivia no problem.

I dont expect to have any problems leaving the country with my bike, as if you enter a country with your bike, they usually want you to leave with it too...

I plan to take my chillean bike back to the UK and have contact the DVLA about it. They say I need a ´certificate of conformity´or to take a kind of advanced MOT test and then they will give me a registration plate. I expect I will have to also pay some VAT on bringing the bike into the country, this may be about 17.5% of its value... Hope that helps a bit!

ALso interested if anyone else has any experience in this?
