Expired Registration in South America

My bike is currently stored in Argentina. I plan on returning in April to renew the TVIP by crossing into Urugray then back into Argentina. My registration has expired and I can't get to Florida to renew it in time. Has anyone had there registration expire during a trip through South America and was it a problem at border crossings?

I remember being asked for the registration but I seem to remember them being more interested in the Plate Number than the expiration date. Any information would be appreciated since I may be forced to take off work and fly back to Florida to renew it , not a cheap option. Thanks again for any information

:innocent:

Most officials won't notice the expiration date. A few will (once in fifty or more document checks for me last year, during all of which I used an expired registration). When they do, you probably want to have an up-to-date registration to show them. Otherwise: bribes at the minimum (with attendant negotiation of the amount due), refusal to allow border crossing or to honor insurance following an accident at the worst.

Florida doesn't allow renewals by mail? Renewals by a third party?

Mine Expired 2007

My Bike Tag expired in August 2007 before I left LA, I made a straight line to the Mexician border and are currently now down in Puntas Arenas , Chile.

I,ve stored my bike three times down here, once on Bolivia and twice in Argentina.
One time I crossed from Buenos Aires into Uruguay the day before my 8 months allowed was up.
I haven,t even had a single person ask or even look for at my registration lience tag.
I scratched out the year long time ago on my number plate.

I wish there was a way I could buy every one on this site a bottle of beer! I was able to renew my registration online in Florida and they are even mailing it to me here in Michigan. Looks like I'll be ready to cross over into Urugray in April without worry. Thanks you guys!!!

Thanks to the post shown above I was able to order my Florida tags online and have them mailed to me out of state. Heres the link:

thanks for the link and excuse my ignorance but i am not up to speed with the law in usa ,does the fact that the bike is a washington state bike mean i have to get my tags from there or can i get them through florida thanks

You need to renew in the state where it's registered. Google Washington State Department of Licensing (or something very similar) and find out how to do it on line with a credit card. You'll need to have the tags mailed to the address where it's registered, then get them forwarded to you.

Otherwise you can presumably re-register the bike in Florida when you arrive in Miami. Same deal, but more fraught: Google the appropriate information about how to register it as a Florida bike. This is different from state to state, and in some states it's impossible as a non-US resident, but Florida is reported easy. A search on this website should find posts from people who've done it.

Hope that helps.

Your tag and flying the bike

Holly:

If you come from Bogota to Miaimi, let me know and when. I can help you with cargo shipping and Miami arrival process and documentation.
Don't worry too much about the tag. Once you get in Miami you can travel the roads to Washington State even if you are over due w/ your tag. Basically you are in transit and a cop would understand the situation.
Re-registering a bike in Florida is possible but you have to pay re- title, registration and some taxes (around $350 dollars approx.) which I don't think is good idea if you live in another state. Because, you would end re-registering again.
I think is better to ride with the old tag and giving excuses during your trip. They let you go without problems.
I've beenn buying bikes as far as Boston and Texas from Miami and never had problems.

If you need good rates From Colombia to Miami flying the bike, let me know I have good contacts and references , since I am bringing riders from/to Miami

Sure I can hlep you on both ends. Depending on you bike you own, it should be around $950 for as 650cc (DR,KLR) about 2.5 m3 (cubic meters), plus crate $220 or so.
Remove the front wheel and windshield, panniers lose, etc..
Air freight work with weight-volume . Example:
2.50 m3 /6 (factor) = 416 Kg. used to calculate $/kg.

However, shipping maritime doesn't work by weight-volume, just cubic. Should be half of the cost.

Bogota, Cali, Medellin and Barranquilla by air
Cartagena & Barranquilla by sea to Miami
