Down the CA and up the 40 or vice versa?

Hi all,

Heading down south soon and wondered if its best to take the 40 south and return up the Carreterra Austral or the other way round - with weather conditions in mind for March and early April? Would it even make a difference?

Cheers!

When we traveled there, the wind was west, south-west most of the time. On the carretera the wind was less then on the 40. I would go down on the carretera and up on the 40, that way you will have the wind in your back more than the other way around. This worked for us. Have fun!

Just did it in Jan, didn't come all the way up the 40 due to ATM/money issues in the Chubut region.

Yeah what's up with that Bruce? I have 3 different cards, two UK and one Ireland, all Visa debits. I have found that the only bank I can withdraw in Argentina is Macrobank, the one with the blue logo. This caused me twice to get stranded without cash and gasoline, luckily other travellers I met came to my rescue and I paid them back via PayPal. My HSBC card has never NOT worked in like dozens of countries around the world, though I've had some issues with my other, a NandP account, apparently something to do with the Americas not having yet adopted Chip and Pin, so there is some sort of incomtability between that and the magnetic strip, can't quite remember what my bank said. Interestingly, all my cards worked fine everywhere in Bolivia!

I've been to Argentina twice before in recent years and never had an issue.

My main card is a CaxtonFX, it has worked "Down the World" and "Round the World", never been an issue before.

My card issuer(s) said there was no problem, but I can only think it is to do with the current financial woes of the country.
