Bear in mind also that in some countries you are not permitted to take national currency out of the country (which can be inconvenient if the place where you can exchange currency is prior to a desk where you have to pay a fee in local currency...)

After the back again strong USD and the weak(er) euro it is again cristal clear what to bring with you.

I did carry always emergency cash with me. For repairs / accidents in remote areas without a nearby ATM or Western Union.

It saves too fee`s you had to pay at optaining cash from ATMs. But is a pain if you hat to store it, for doing party or day trips. Think it through, where do you store the cash while doing:

- daytrip by quad
- dancing in the club
- dating at the next day
- surfing at the beach

What is probably too a small part of the trip. Considering this, you may take the perfect amount of emergency cash with you ;-)

As other wrote too, your cash/card Setup should consider 2-3 cards.

I just returned from a south american trip. I had 2'000 USD cash with me but rarely used cash. In Argentia just use western union, in all other countries atm and debit/credit cards.
