Colombia - import permit

Hi,

I am buying a bike in Colombia (registered in the USA), and want to take it out from the country to Ecuador.
I will not manage to take it out of the country before the import permit expires.
Is there much risk in preparing a fake copy of the permit? (Can Police check the numbers? etc) I will fly in Bogota and the permit will be issued at the Ecuador-Colombia border.

Is it possible that the current owner requests now for extension of the permit (which expires in one month), even if his visa will expire in one month?

(The current owner has to leave the country and I will arrive in one month)

THanks for suggestions

Michal

i had my bike in colombia for 18 months and the permit was well expired ,i never got asked for it by the cops ,only for my passport ,they dont check at the border as your going out, i went straight into venezuala without a problem at all ,but who is to say that is right as usual i may get grilled about this info ,but i am sure you will be fine, the title needs to be in your name though ,but that is another story

You can extend a temporary importation permit up to 6 month per calender year with a tourist visas (with a residency visa its longer). The permit is given after you have gotten your visa extension in your passport and always follows your personal visa.

You might get in trouble if the current owner doesn't go with you to the border as its his name on the bike permit. Colombia is getting more and more system in their administration by the week.

At this stage i will be leaving Columbia Sept 25th, 3 days after my permit expires. Ex Turbo on a boat to Panama. I will renew my visa but probably wont worry with the bike.

I will post results when i find Internet in Panama... 10 days later

i wouldnt worry

i wouldnt worry they rarely check your paperwork in colombia and if you have a fake one they never call it in or anything.... worst comes to worst just say your in a hurry and be cool.... ive never been asked for a bribe in colombia.... and once you get to that border you can cross into ecuador no problem cars and bikes cross all the time without them checking them because they have some kind of agreement where you dont have to register or get paperwork ifyour only going as far as like pasto or cali or something when you get into colombia but you will have to get paperwork once you hit ecuador.... however....... i rode a klr 650 all over south america with an american title in the original owners name and nothing more than a notarized piece of paper from a lawyer that said I was "riding the bike back to the United states" because that was my original plan from panama but changed my mind and hit south america..... so in order to avoid paying taxes etc... you can get an authorization basically that says you can ride it wherever... only places that dont accept that are Brazil but i just kept going past their border rode carnival and all over brazil and never got stopped... but maybe im just lucky
