Bypass El Salvador?
 

Hi,
We are in Guatemala now and are wondering if CA2 through Honduras is still a good route?
We have local info that says go into El salvador at Angulatu and enter Honduras at El Amatillo? better roads and safer.
We originally wanted to enter Honduras at Copan then down into El Salvador at El Poy, then re-enter Honduras at El Amatillo, but import duties etc. are $40-$50
each time into Honduras.
sugestions anyone?

El Salvador/Hondurus border crossings
 

Cameron, based on my experience in 2004, (Cincinnati to Usuhaia and return), i reccommend by-passing El Salvador and leaving Guatamula entering Hondurus at El Florida (Copan). there's a new road from Chiquimula Guat. to El Florida. the road is good and the border crossing there was uneventful.
going south, 2003, i stayed on CA2 and the Amatillo crossing was the worst of my entire trip. avoid it. corrupt officials.
stay a few days and enjoy the beauty of the Copan Ruins....nicer than Tikal.

exit Hondurus into Nicaragua at Ocotal. there's a nice hotel in Ocotal just south of the border with a pool and restaurant.

I had no problem on CA2 and El Salvador is a great county (pm me if you need contacts in El Salvador). On the other hand, the only border I had any difficulty at was entering Honduras from El Salvador (see border crossing info under Planning tab). The border at Copan has a good reputation.

I would not want to enter Honduras twice, but just do what you want to do and don{t worry about the borders. Honduras is as bad as it gets and it really isnt that bad.

Copan nicer than Tikal ?!?
