Buying and selling a car in South America
 

Hi everyone


I am looking to buy a local car in Chile or Peru and drive it around South America, hopefully visiting every country


I know its possible to buy a car but can I sell it in another country in SA ?



All I can find online up until now has been about imported cars.

Usually to permanent Export a car from one country to another you have to be a formal Exporter and to Import (and pay the duties) also you have to be a formal Importer. And from been a tourist becomes in a Exporter-Importer businessman isn’t so simple; all that without considerer that in most countries here have restrictions to permanent import used vehicles…

For example in Argentina Legally even when you can buy a local car or bike and register in your name as a tourist you are NOT allowed to take it outside Argentina for the first year in your name.
So... and then you have to see how you will manage to exit the country without be rejected at the borders.
Also sell it in other country from where are registered is illegal. I don’t know exactly how all of this works in each country but usually all countries in South America have similar restrictive laws. In Chile they allow you to exit with the compromise you will return the vehicle. I don’t know in Peru but anyway are lot of first hand “legal” information on the HUBB about these matters...

So if I import a car from outside South America its ok to cross all borders but if I buy a car in South America then I cannot? That makes no sense to me as the car belongs to me either way

I have searched all the Hubb and still cannot find the answer, everything I have seen refers to either bikes or imported cars

I will just have to keep posting on more websites because I have not had alot of response yet

NO, the car belongs to you but registered to the country where you have purchased, if it’s from your own country outside South America you have the right to travel with your vehicle as a tourist in other countries but not to sell it, means that if you bring a vehicle will be here under what is call a “Temporal Importation for tourism purposes” what usually is a formal compromise that you will take your belongs with you when you exit a country, you are not formal “Importing” a car (final importation).
If you buy a car in any country in South America they usually try to prevent exactly what you are trying to see if can be done, buy in one place and sale in another without make a proper export, import and taxes payments.

It was sarcastic, true because this question is here every few days and therefore easy to find with google. Brasil for example has a very very high import tax up to 100% of the new price and does not alow old cars thats why between.boarders you allways find so many wrack vehicles.
If you dont want to go through a lot of expensive paperwork and dont want to bribe someone or ship the car back thats were you coul leave your vehicle at the end...

But I am not asking how to 'buy in one place and sale in another without make a proper export, import and taxes payments' ???

I am asking if it is possible and what the process is???

Let's keep on the subject, the question was "Is it possible to buy a car in one country and sell in another one?"

I believe there's nobody more experienced on this subject than Javier who has been helping bikers with the best advice all over these years, here goes a tip, if you want toavoid risks and stay on the safe and legal side, you should take Javier's advice. I work on trading on the border of Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina and don't recommend, as Javier, anyone trying to import a vehicle into SA. Just to give you an idea, Brazil doesn't even allow used vehicles to be imported to Brazil.

On the other hand Tobias is not totally wrong, because that was his experience in SA and actually he answered your question, you can sell your car in another country, but not legally, Even I and many other bikers have sold european bikes in SA "illegally", it's a risk you have, so consider about buying your vehicle, have a good time and try to sell on the black market, scrap, or even in a big farm, but have in mind you may not sell and maybe you have to leave it behind.

It's definetly a good idea to buy a vehicle in SA, specially Paraguay, but you must have this pros and cons in mind.

Why not just drive back to Chile, roads are good,borders are easy and you will never be that far away, a week of driving at most, even from Colombia or Brazil.

Thanks for the response Rod, I have got alot more info from other members on the Hubb and other sites now so have a better understanding of my options.
