Buying foreign plate motocycle in SA?

Hello guys!

First I plan to do roadtrip from Colombia to Argentina in DEC this year.
I need to buy a moto in Colombia but problem is which do I have to buy?
I have read a lot of articles and there are 3 ways to buy. 1.new one 2.used 3.used with foreign plate.

In my budget I'm available to spend around $3K~4K, so I think that buy used 650cc moto with foreign plate is the best option.

The problem is if I buy motocycle with foreign plate how can I chage name of registration illegaly or legally?

I read it is almost impossible do that thing legally in Colombia, so making false document with scanner is the only way to do that?
I heard a lot of travler do that thing but not sure it will work to me coz I'm not US or EU citizen.
Is there another method?

Thanks

Hi,

I just bought and registrated a new motorbike in Cali (Honda XR 650 L) on my name without any problems (I'm a German and I don't live in Colombia).

So it should be posible with a used bike, too...

And for those people who are about to say "it's illegal, you must buy from me in Peru etc....." it's easier and legal to buy a foreign used bike (either just with a poder or with change of ownership). And also very possible as the previous poster said to buy a new bike.

And I apologise for not reading your post fully, most foreign bikes here are from North America. Look up Alex Smith or overland title services for title transfer. Very very easy with him.

Hello

No matter what your nationality is, forging documents leads you to the same prison cell like US or EU citizens.

No, I said that SELLING a moto not registered in that country (that entered under a TVIP agreement ) for the moto to stay in that country is illegal. TRANSFERRING the moto to a new onwer who will continue to ride from country to country is very different.

If you are going to be sarcastic, get your facts straight! bier

Thanks.
But unfortunately, As far as I read, buying used motocycle with foreign plate in Colombia is really hard to do legally..It is easy to buy used one with Colombia plate.

BTW how much did u spend for XR650 in Kali? I heard it is expensive if engine is over 400CC

What's the difference? As I've said before. If you're giving advice on the HUBB forum, regarding buying or selling bikes, it's going to be between travellers. And what do all people do in that situation? Get a poder and transfer the paperwork if it's possible. Look, I appreciate that you have a service that you provide in Peru which is great. And that I'm sure you do a great job with your customers, and of course, the more work you get the better.

I'm not being sarcastic, you're arguing over semantics. I don't think that the advice you give on here sometimes is helpful. I've also said before, specifically because of some comments that you've written on hubb I almost ditched the motorcycle round south America idea all together.

No problem to buy a used Colombian bike and register it in your name.

If buying a foreign bike, best is a US registered bike. Best way is to have Alex Smith register it in your name, leave Colombia and cancel TVIP, switch plates before entering Ecuador. My experience at this border was that they took my TVIP and never even looked out the window of the office to see that I actually had a bike with me.

new rider, tobi has been a contributor here for a long time and he has not crew or mislead anyone here. He has helped out a lot of people, and contrary to what you say toby goes to the facts, and what he says is factual, true and helpful. What you suggest is hazardous to say the least and we expatriates that live in Colombia have seen travelers get so deep in trouble by folowing hairy suggestions and crying for help afterward.

Well, thanks for your input. Very relevant to the OP, maybe a PM would have been better? I have a few things to say on the matter aswel though since you've insisted on bringing it up again.

1. Contributing member? Doesn't say that? Same goes for you? Perhaps if you are so concerned about the goings on on this forum you could help keep it afloat? Just a suggestion.

2. What would you like me to do, post links to all the posts I've found to be irrelevant or misleading? Thus possibly getting me and him banned in the process?

3. Doomsaying about all the foreigners that are in trouble or crying for help, or even going to prison for fake documents without backing it up is as much use as chewing gum to solve an algebra problem. The op has decided that buying a foreign plated bike in Colombia is too difficult, based on what he's read on here. And the reality is it's a piece of cake and is done all the time. So has he received good or poor advice?

I think it would be prudent if a moderator deleted your post and this one, and gave us all a stern warning about conduct in a public forum.
