buying a bike in South America - pls advise

Hi,

Could you please advise a little on buying a bike in South America. I am currently in Ecuador (on my round the world trip for some 1,5 years now) and just got this idea (better to say I just become crazy about it, oh how crazy !) to buy a small on-off bike like Honda 200 xl here, ride some 5 months on the continent and then send it home.

Would be very grateful for any hints:

(1) where is this magic best place to buy a decent bike (preferably 1-2 years old)? - paperwork and all

(2) I learnt that I can register it in my name (at least in Ecuador) do not need any carnet or similar pain and would be free to ride it no problem - tru?

(3) how often there are police controls and are they really crazy about international driving licence - i have my stolen somewhere in India and have to work out some solution?

Many thanks for any ideas.

Regards,
Konrad

Not so easy in SA

Hi Konrad
I think you best options are Chile and Paraguay. And be advised they are not cheap in SA! for a little xr be prepared to pay up to 3000 us!
Can you get from a family member in poland a new license?and an international too?I know you can buy the international here at any mayor Car society.Like Rotary,ACA,etc. But you need your original license.Remember is a legal document.
Good luck
KH

DR650SE for Sale in Argentina

2 readily equipped Travel-Bikes for sale in South America around May 2009:
SUZUKI DR 650 SE, year 2008, 16.000 Miles (~25.000 km)
Reconsider shipping your own bike to South America. There are two ideal Travel bikes already waiting for you there. As European citizens we had bought them in California and drove them down south to Argentina. They are now waiting for you to drive them a bit further around South America or even back to the US.

Each bike is readily equipped with:
  • 2 Aluminum Pannier Boxes (Happy Trail - Teton 9“)
  • SU-Rack and fast Puck-Mounts for the Aluminum Boxes
  • Top-Rack for additional bags (e.g. Stuffsack or Camping equipment)
  • Extra large 5 Gallon (20 Liter) IMS gas tank (blue)
  • Stronger front and rear spring as wellas stonger fork oil (SAE10) resulting in much improved hghway and offroad performance.
  • Aluminum Skid Plate for additional frame and engine protection
Current condition:
  • All services (Oil & Filter changes, valve adjustments etc.) have been performed as required in the maintenance book.
  • Chains and sprokets will be replaced by new ones before sale.
  • Bikes did not have any crashes.
  • There are only minor damages (slightly indented) to the pannier boxes which occurred from the bike falling off the side stand or tumbling over while stopping in slippery terrain. Boxes do still fit tight to the box racks and are all still absolutely waterproof.
Paperwork:
Bikes can be handed over in Argentina or Chile.
Custom papers will best be changed to buyers name at a border post.
Registration of the bikes can also easily be changed within the US to buyers name (even if the buyer is a non-US-resident).
