Buying a new bike
 

I am embarking on a 2016 trip to SA. I would like to buy a bike on the west coast of South America. In particular I am interested in a Kawasaki KLR 650. I have one and have used it extensively for travel. I am completely in the dark as to where I should buy the bike, insurance and regulations concerning leaving the country with the bike and possibly selling in another country (most likely Brazil). IF anyone can supply any information or point me in the right direction it is greatly appreciated.

Consider buying a 250 cc bike via Toby (charapashanperu). I rode with him in Nov 2014 and totally endorse his offer. He is a stand up guy. Will make the paperwork required to aquire a bike painless. Follow this link for deatils. I am planning on buy a bike through him for a future trip. Toby has a workshop and will fabricate a rack to support soft paniers. Not sure about hard cases, but frankly I don't think you need them.

Thousands of posts about this sort of thing here. First off, it's mostly illegal to sell your bike in most S. American countries unless bike originated in the country your selling it in.

"foreign" bikes can be sold legally but not that easy to do ... but hundreds manage it anyway. A hassle.

If you have a KLR why not just ride it SOUTH? If you're short on time then I would not recommend trying a sell a bike you've just bought ... selling takes time ... and can be COMPLICATED.

If you look here on the HUBB "bikes for sale" forum you will see that the KLR is CLEARLY the most popular bike you will see for sale. In the past year I've seen probably 10 or more come up for sale all over S. America. Some new, some old, some crappers and some minters.

I'd bet very few of them ever ended up being sold ... so who knows what happened to them?

You could buy a KLR from a shop there if you could find one. Probably a few around but realize 85% of bikes there are Chinese 125's and small scooters.

Shop round on HUBB and make a deal. Hard part is getting the paperwork/TVIP in your name so you can cross borders. doh

Best course of action (IMO) beyond riding your own bike South ...would be to take Peter's suggestion and rent or buy from Toby in Peru'. The guy knows his stuff. It would be a GREAT ... HASSLE FREE TRIP!
