I crossed at Copacabana, it was really nice and we had a private hotel overlooking the lake which was really cheap. From there you can get a very cheap (about 4 bols) ferry boat which takes about 30 mins to hit the main land again.

Also be vigilant in that area, I was told that there are several organised gangs doing express kidnappings.

can agree with pockethead.

Copacobana is really nice place. Spent there over a week last year. Pretty cheap and good hostels, nice to visit the island on the lake,... Nice sunset from the hill...

From there it was like 3hours by bus to La Paz...normally. It took us over 6hours, but thats another story...

Via Copacabana

Go via Copa, Its a better route imo. I did both the routes within the last 12 months & the copa route is my favourite. Copa also makes a better stop over to see the lake rather than Puno. Also if you get a chance you can get your bike blessed at La Virgen de Copacaban, what a novel idea & loads of fun.

Cheers Mojo..

Best road - for sure!

Puno - Copacabana

then not direct to La Paz!!!

Copacabana - Sorata - Konsata - Mapiri - Guanay - Coroico

and then the "Death road" to La Paz!!!

THats the real adventure - takes you about 1-2 weeks!!!

Crossing rivers etc... Did it a couple of years ago, some friends did it this year:

hmmmm

go through copa cobana.... its a boring little uneventful town but its beautiful at least..... but make sure you get everything done at the border at once.... i showed up there late and they only had time to do my bike paperwork and said come back the next day for my passport stamp.... so when i came back they said i illegally entered bolivia and the guy tried to get $400 out of me which i laughed my ass off at because there was no atm til la paz not to mention it was the funniest thing id heard all week..... somehow bargained him down to a bottle of coke.... but gotta give him credit for trying

thecanoeguy 21 Sep 2009 16:07

did thar route

it rained most of the way ,mud slides blocked roads ,red slippery clay ,2 and a half days from puno to la paz ,including the death road , a mountain bike went over the edge while i was there ,nasty ,,,but all in all a great route ,except i blew my rear shock

Canoeguy,

When was your trip? I will enter at Copa next week, and will try to get to the Salar before the rains start.

Thanks,
Mike
