Alternative to Ferry
If the ferry does not continue running past April, is driving through Mexico to get back to the U.S. a good option? Would it safe for two females? Anyone have any advice or experiences? Thanks!

KitKat, We just rode through Chiapas and were simply waved through at the few army checkpoints we passed. Roads were excellent and should be no problem for you there, even less so if you go through Quintana Roo. If you go through Chiapas, be sure to cross at La Mesilla. Took us 1.5 hours with no agent. Have heard of problems and delays on the more southern routes, which are frequented by trucks.

I understand the Tuesday run from Tampa to Puerto Moreles has been suspended. Apparently, the cruise ship paid someone in Mexico to dredge the channel and it didn't get done. They are still running the Friday run to Progresso though. The last couple years I rode to and from Wisconsin through Mexco, Guatemala, and Belize and had no problems. There were 4 guys on one trip and 2 on the other although we met up with two more guys in Mexico on the way south. I think it would be safe for 2 women if you stay on the marked highways and stayed in hotels. We tried to avoid the larger cities and if we had to go though one, would do it during the middle of the day so we wouldn't get caught in traffic when the sun goes down.
