Advice on good routes in Argentina?

Hey guys,

Just wondering i anyone has any advice for some nice roads in Argentina. Im in Santiago now and will be crossing over to Argentina next week. Keeping in mind that its winter and bloody cold I dont want to go much further south! So my basic plan is to head to Mendoza and then Cordoba on the way to Buenos Aires. Also I have some friends in Mar del Plata that I may visit.

If anyone knows any interesting roads linking these places or in the area please let me know. Im like getting off the main highways and enjoy both tarmac and dirt but need some interesting roads after 3 days riding in the Atacama desert (possibly the most boring riding in the world!)

Cheers

Make sure you check ahead before you go for the crossing to Mendoza. It's been snowing very hard and was closed to traffic for the past weeks. It's been open a few times, for a few hours, but last I heard there were 3000 trucks waiting in line to cross.

We crossed from Los Andes to Uspallata over this pass less than 2 weeks ago, although as gp says, it has been closed off and on recently, so best to check. The day before we crossed it was closed, therefore loads of trucks, as I believe there are now.

Uspallata youth hostel, 8 kms out of town on the Mendoza road is a good stopover which allows you to park the bike inside. For a great ride to Mendoza, head North out of Uspallata on the ripio (Ruta 52) via Villavicencio. Good views of Aconcagua and a fun ride down gravel hairpins over the otherside.

Enjoy!

Thanks guys. Ill definately be checking the condition of the highway before attempting the pass. lm going to look like a big ball sitting on top of the moto with all the clothes Ill be wearing. For an aussie its cold enough riding around here at sea level... up at 4000m its gonna be pretty intense! Also I checked on the map and ruta 52 looks like a goer. So has anyone else got any specific roads that were good in their experience? Im trying to decide on a route fom Mendoza to Cordoba....

Hi Ilya
The cold isn’t the worst. The snow and the ICE it will be your killer. The pass between Santiago and Mendoza (when its open, in winter) its only for cars and truck with tire chains.
Your best choice its try to find a lift on a truck or pick-up until Mendoza City.

VERY IMPORTANT: Don’t forget to ask for your new Argentinean Temporary Import at the border!!!!

Here I give you a link to see Borders Crosses condition, Its updated every working day at 01:00PM Estado de Rutas de los Pasos Internacionales

Here also you can check National Routes conditions: Automóvil Club Argentino

Hope to see you here in BA Sano y Salvo (in one piece).
Saludos

Hey Javier,

Thanks mate I will definately be seeing you guys in BA! (I sincerely hope in one piece) Above Em and Hame said they did the pass 2 weeks ago. Its not possible to cross any more on a moto? I checked the weather and it looks good next week so I might give it a go then. If not then I hope there are some nice chileno truck drivers...

See ya at Dakar Motors
