Advice for customs procedures in Buenos Aires
 

Some advice for people shipping into Argentina:

A couple of additional points:

1) You definitely can do the whole thing yourself without a customs broker, as long as you speak some Spanish. I managed it without difficulty. The officials are surprisingly friendly and helpful. If you have no Spanish, you will need help. The two brokers I spoke to wanted $1000. Use Sandra at dakar_motos_index, who will charge $400, is experienced and friendly. She speaks perfect English.

3) You do not need to bring your own photocopies of your documentation. Even when I offered mine, they made their own copies.

2) EMBA has moved. There is a free bus (red) from the entrance to the terminal to the new EMBA office. Watch the route, because you will often have to walk if the driver is at lunch etc. The guys you need at EMBA are on the first floor, second door on the left.

3) They did not ask for an international driving license. Lucky for me, because mine has expired.

4) I was never asked for proof of insurance when exiting the terminal. I got some anyway from:

Ask for Analia Cabezal. She was very efficient and familiar with what overlanders want. Make sure you have some pictures of the car (best saved on your email account) that she can look at. Six months third party cover was $170 and covers the Mercosur region (not Ecuador or Colombia).

5) Coen's cost breakdown does not seem to include the Desconsolidado, which is the opening of the container. This was an additional $200.
