4x4 rental in Chile
 

Hello,

I plan to go to Chile with a friend in December. We'll arrive in Santiago. For several trips along the coastline, we need a 4x4 pickup. Nothing fancy, just something that takes us through the dunes on the beach.

Unfortunately, the 4x4 rentals, I found via web search are all rather expensive. They're also usually for rather new cars.

Does anybody here have a hint where to find cheap 4x4 rentals arount Santiago de Chile? We don't mind if the car is a bit older.

The places that will rent you a 4x4 will also stipulate that you cant take it off road.

Driving on the beach or offroad will invalidate your insurance and leave you on the hook for the full vehicle value if something goes wrong.

Lots of people do it, but officially you are not allowed to drive on the beach in most places. The coast guard have CanAm 650 quads. You cant outrun them. Dont askme how i know...,

They dont always enforce the rules about where you can drive, they tend to do campaigns. And there are exceptions, some areas if you have a fishing license you are allowed to be there.

The actual roads closest to the coast are a mix of paved and gravel, all are passable in a 2wd pickup or small sedan with reasonable ground clearance.
